Over the years, I have made photographs at various concerts, but I’ve never really shown them to folk. I don’t go to a great many concerts, but I thought I should maybe start to show some of the images I produce (see my blog posting after the Karine Polwart CD launch). I am interested in capturing something of the passion that an individual performer brings.
I’ll start with images from recent events, and gradually add more over time, from past concerts, as well as newer ones.
Karine Polwart – August 2012
Karine Polwart released a new album, Traces, in August 2012. I have all her albums so far, and have tended to buy these in Coda Music, one of the few remaining independent record shops in the country focusing on folk and world music – and they do mail order, so I encourage you to support them, rather than the big online retailers or download sites that kill off such wonderful places! 🙂 Coda hosted an album launch on 17.8.2012, with Karine playing with Inge Thomsonand her brother, Steven Polwart. A lovely occasion, and the new album is wonderful!
Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham – August 2012
I first saw/heard Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham in a concert hall, but this August I saw them in Cramond Kirk, Edinburgh – a much more intimate setting, and more suited for the kind of interaction they have with the audience. Phil went to the same school as my son, which is a nice thought. 🙂 And of course, I now have their newest album too…

Of course, I try not to let my photography get in the way of the performers, though I’m aware that it may sometimes be a bit distracting, especially since acceptable results require being relatively close. I never use flash, and only fast prime lenses, especially the 105mm/2 DC and 50mm/1.4.
